Motorcycle jackets have been popular for just as long as riding a motorcycle has been. Motorcycles reached their peak popularity in the 1950's, and have been a strong driving force ever since. Motorcycles have signified the essence of cool for so long now, that even those people that will not actually ride a motorcycle want to wear motorcycle jackets because they too give off the essence of cool for so many people. Gone are the days when you had to be motorcycle rider in order to wear the jackets. Now people wear them just for the status that goes with them.

Early jackets used for motorcycle riding from 1920-30 were aviator/military style jackets that had a button front closure, and a short mandarin style collar. Brown goatskin styles were very popular with short styling, and fitted waist. Many of these emulated the A-1 jacket used by the Army Air Corp before WWII. Also used were button front coat styles that were constructed of thick horsehide. The hides were abundantly available prior to WWII because the Army Calvary and most farmers used horses and provided hides from their stock to the clothing industry. It didn't take long before leather jackets became the most popular.

In the 80's, denim motorcycle jackets gained a great deal of popularity, but the material's popularity didn't last a long time. Today motorcycle jackets made up of leather is still the most popular style. Celebrities like Marlon Brando popularized the leather motorcycle jacket in movies like "The Wild Ones". To this day, the leather motorcycle jacket is the national symbol of the cool at heart. The leather motorcycle jacket is also the symbol of the rebel. There was never a rebel portrayed on television that wasn't wearing a leather jacket. The motorcycle jacket is always one of the coolest.
